Meeting Alfie Douglas

If you remember a couple of months ago, I had told you about some cool brands I had discovered at the London Fashion Weekend, one of which was the leather accessories brand Alfie DouglasI got in touch with them and had the opportunity to meet them in their new workshop in the Western suburbs of London. The mom of the A.D family, Davida, kindly took some time as well to answer my questions.

How did you come up with your business idea?
Our brand was first conceived in 2011 from the desire to design and create a range of original products that could be manufactured using simple techniques and utilise sophisticated marketing channels to distribute them to a worldwide audience.

Were you all together from the beginning?
I started by myself with my husband Simon. Once we came up with the ‘Alfie Douglas‘ concept, our four daughters soon slotted into the business with their various skills.

How is it to work as a family?
We each have different skills in areas such as design, photography, marketing and production, etc. so it works extremely well as we complement each other.

What are the most enjoyable things and the challenges you face?
The most enjoyable aspect for me is the design process. We have the ability to design and manufacture the prototypes in-house and, once we are happy with the design, it feels so great when we finally see it on our website. There are many challenges but I suppose the main one is to make sure that our customers like the designs we come up with.

What is the inspiration for the name of your brand?
It is a family name which we thought suited perfectly the feel we wanted to give to our brand.

How would you describe your brand in 3 words?
Simple, ingenious, handmade

Where do you get your inspiration for your collections?
Our designs are a reaction to the ‘sameness’ of the current high-end bags market, with excessive branding and over-elaborate designs. We want our products to last a lifetime, that means that their designs need to pass the test of time and therefore to be ‘timeless’.

What are your plans for the next few years?
We are planning on developing further complementary products in shoes and clothing, always adopting the same principles.

Now and then, Alfie Douglas are organising open days at their workshop, check out their website to know about the upcoming ones. So what do you think of Alfie Douglas designs? Do you like their bags? A special thank you to the A.D family for the warm welcome 🙂
